Current style plates have been issued since September 2001 and remain the standard UK format today. They follow the pattern of two letters (area code), two numbers (age identifier), and three random letters — for example, AB51 CDE.

The two-digit age identifier changes twice a year: the actual year number is used from March to August (e.g., 24 for 2024), and the year plus 50 from September to February (e.g., 74 for September 2024 to February 2025).
