MONIKR (“we”, “us”, “our”) operates the monikr.co.uk website. The data controller is MONIKR, a UK-based number plate dealer certified by the DVLA. This policy explains what personal data we collect, why we collect it, and your rights under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.

What We Collect

  • Search queries — plate registrations and keywords you search for, used to return results and improve our matching algorithm.
  • Contact details — name and email address if you contact us, request a valuation, or register an account.
  • Payment information — processed securely by Stripe. We never store full card numbers on our servers.
  • Usage data — anonymised analytics including pages visited, referral source, and device type, collected via Google Analytics.
  • DVLA transfer data — vehicle registration details required to process a plate transfer, shared with the DVLA as legally required.

How We Use It

We process your data for the following purposes under UK GDPR:

  • Contract performance — fulfilling plate purchases and processing DVLA transfers.
  • Legitimate interest — improving our search algorithm, preventing fraud, and understanding how the site is used.
  • Consent — sending marketing emails (only if you opt in). You can unsubscribe at any time.
  • Legal obligation — sharing transfer data with the DVLA and retaining records as required by UK law.

Third Parties

We share data with the following third parties, only as necessary:

  • Stripe — payment processing. Stripe's privacy policy applies to payment data they handle.
  • Google Analytics — anonymised usage statistics. No personally identifiable information is sent.
  • DVLA — vehicle registration data necessary for plate transfers, shared under legal obligation.
  • Vercel — website hosting. Subject to Vercel's data processing agreement.

Data Retention

  • Account data — retained for as long as your account is active, then deleted within 30 days of account closure.
  • Transaction records — retained for 6 years as required by HMRC.
  • Search queries — anonymised after 90 days.
  • Analytics data — retained for 14 months by Google Analytics, then automatically deleted.
